Hot! Hot! Hot! The Latin Dances

OK, so you finally decided to try Ballroom Dancing. Good for you! Dancing is fun, healthy, makes you feel energetic, take care of your body, and (ladies!) gives you an excuse to buy more shoes! And Ballroom dancing, since it involves dancing face-to-face with other people, also helps you meet new people and be more social.

The only problem with Ballroom Dancing is that there are so many dances to choose from. That's where making an educated choice about which dances you think you may want to learn can save you lots of energy, time and money.
Ballroom is divided into Smooth and Latin; I am going to start with Latin. Here is a little history, a little background, and a little feeling behind some of the most popular Latin dances.

CHA-CHA

Cha-cha comes from Cuba, and like everything Cuban, it is hot, hot, hot! When dancing Cha-cha you must flirt like you've never flirted before! Let your partner know you like being in his or her arms, and when they least expect it, break free and show them that you've got something they want!

SAMBA

Samba is a Brazilian dance that represents the culture of Rio de Janeiro. It is the Latin Waltz. It moves around the floor in elegant, yet playful patterns. Samba is exciting and energetic, and requires a lot of body rhythm in addition to your footwork.

RUMBA

Ballroom style Rumba is the dance of deep, persistent love. It is the dance where pure feeling takes over. It is not only a love story, but a life story. It is a story of a relationship that is deeper than the one portrayed in dances like the Cha-cha or Samba. It is a relationship where the partners have a past, a shared history together. It is not the naive kind of love where everything is always sunny and bright! Rumba is about hurt as much as it is about the good times. It is about being together through thick and thin, getting angry and forgiving, and still loving that person deeply and passionately even after everything you've been through together.

SALSA

The main characteristic of Salsa is that it is fun! There is no right or wrong way to dance Salsa - there are numerous styles, all of which are respected in their own right. You can dance on 1, or 2, to the clave, or any other instrument. All you need is the ability to have fun with your dancing, and a few basic steps, and you are well on your way to being a competent Salsa dancer!

Salsa has its own technique and proper styling, just like any other dance, but it is a dance open to your interpretation. Do you like to flirt with your partner, with the audience, dance by yourself, make everything your partner does look good, make sharp accents, or smooth transitions? Any combination of these is a legitimate ways of dancing Salsa.

Preventing Shin Splints

As with any sports injury, it's always best to take steps to prevent it rather than trying to fix it after it happens. Shin splints are no exception. Much of the literature concerning shin splints is directed at treatments, but very little is written about prevention. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to reduce your chance of getting this pain.

Adequate Footwear

About half of all shin splints are cause from biomechanics inadequacies, and most of these are the result of bad shoes. Spending extra money for the ideal shoes is a small price to pay to avoid the pain of shin splints. A podiatrist can help you find the best type of shoes for your feet by doing a gait analysis.

Warm up

Before doing any exercise routine, warm up your muscles and tendons completely. This prepares them for the activity you're about to do so they can get loose. A proper warm up also increases blood flow to the muscle groups, reducing their risk for pain and injury.

Stretching

Loose muscle move more freely and help prevent injury. When your lower leg muscles are stretched properly, they are more flexible and they can perform better. If the muscles are tight, though, they get pushed beyond their natural range of motion too easily and become overstretched. Be sure to include a comprehensive stretching routine as part of any exercise or workout routine.

Strengthen

Stronger leg muscles don't get fatigued as quickly or as often as weaker leg muscles. Be sure to include strengthening exercises for your lower legs with any routine. Many exercises are specifically designed to help prevent shin splints and you can find some of those exercises here. Treating Shin Splints

Although you can take several steps to prevent shin splints from occurring, there is still a chance that you might get them from time to time. When you do, follow these steps to treat the problem and reduce the pain.
Use the R.I.C.E.R. method -- rest, ice, compression, elevation and referral. Do this method for the first 48 to 72 hours to relieve any pain and swelling that may occur. Immediate action also gives you the best chance for a complete recovery.


Apply heat and massage to the affected area. Unlike other muscle injuries like an ankle sprain, the muscles and tendons involved in shin splints are relieved quicker when heat is applied. In between putting heat on the area, give it a deep tissue massage for a few minutes at a time.


Move to the rehabilitation phase. Do some exercises and activities to regain strength and flexibility throughout your lower leg.

Finally, recognize the reason for the shin splints and remove the source. If it was the result of bad shoes, get better ones. If it was the result of running on uneven ground, avoid doing that in the future.

Emily's Mom Trailer

Emily Osment is stressed. Her older brother, Scott, has just gone off to college and has left her alone with their mother. Emily doesn't hate her mother, it's just that she's just too pretty and good at everything. Except in the love department. Emily has been there for her mother, through the downs of her love life. Heather (Emily's Mom): *storms in crying* Emily: Mom! What happened? Heather: He's married! I thought he was different from all the rest! *sobs* Emily: *thinking* That's what she says about all of them. *out loud* I know. I'm here for you. Heather: *puts her head on Emily's shoulder and cries harder* Emily: *thinking* Scott, why'd you have to go? Please help me. Meanwhile, all of the guys in her grade are in love with Emily's mom. Even Joe, Emily's best friend, whom she has the biggest crush on. Too bad he doesn't know that. Joe: *sits at the kitchen counter* I know! He didn't even notice ...

Walking is the Best Exercise

Running, jogging, weight lifting, calesthenics. These are
all good for keeping in shape but walking is still the most
simple, and effective, of all exercises to lose weight and
stay in shape and maintain good health.

Approximately 67 million Americans of all ages walk for
exercise regularly. Walking can be done with friends or
alone. And it can be performed outside or inside.

Walking helps the metabolic system to control weight,
regulate blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. A brisk walk
burns up to 100 calories per mile.

Walking is an aerobic exercise meaning that it uses oxygen.
A brisk walk increases oxygen intake to the blood,
strengthens the heart, improves circulation and lowers blood
pressure.

For people with poor circulation in the arms and legs,
walking can help to increase the size and improve the
efficiency of the tiny blood vessels that supply blood to
the cells.

Walking slows development of all forms of arthritis,
degenerative joint disease, stops loss of bone mass in
osteoporosis, and tones the muscles.

Walking helps recovery from back pain.

For women walking reduces premenstrual and pain during
periods.

Regular walking also relieves and prevents constipation.

Psychologically, walking generates an overall feeling of
well-being because it produces endorphins, a natural
tranquilizer. This aids in relief of depression, anxiety,
and stress.

To get the most benefit from walking, 30 minutes of walking
must be done at a brisk pace without stopping. Gradually
increase time to 40 to 60 minutes for each session.

Always stretch muscles and warm up before walking.

Wear walking or running shoes that fit snugly but not too
tight, support the arch and lift the heel slightly. Replace
your walking shoes every 6 months or 600 miles, whichever
comes first.

In hot, cold and inclement weather consider getting a
treadmill for walking indoors.
